Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is a community-conscious, action-oriented organization committed to effectively and compassionately meeting the needs of the communities it serves. Without exception, the Sorors of the Nu Xi Zeta Chapter are equally committed to improving the quality of life in our local communities, while embracing the transitions needed to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
The history of the Nu Xi Zeta chapter begins with the dedication, vision, and foresight of the Alpha Zeta chapter, Zeta’s first graduate chapter, of Baltimore, MD.
In the early 1980’s, Past International President Eunice Thomas suggested that Alpha Zeta help start a chapter in Northern Virginia. On November 28, 1986, the Nu Xi Zeta chapter was chartered to serve the Alexandria, Virginia community. The chapter's charter members are:
- Soror Thelma Duggin
- Soror Virginia Spaulding
- Soror JoAnn Collins
- Soror Beatrice Welters
- Soror Constance Herman
- Dr. Lucy Perez
- Dr. Elaine Johnson
With the chapter’s proximity to Washington, DC, Nu Xi Zeta has always been committed to enhancing our community’s relationship with the executive and legislative branches of government. Many of the chapter’s first members were political appointees at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA), the White House, and worked for Members of Congress.
In 1995, Nu Xi Zeta held a successful legislative forum on Capitol Hill on health care. Due to the prominence of Nu Xi Zeta members, the event brought major stakeholders on Capitol Hill and in the health care community together to discuss this critical issue.
