Service
Community Lodgings - The Chapter partnered with Community Lodgings, a low income, transition housing area whose mission is to lift families from a state of instability and homelessness to independence and self-sufficiency through provision of Affordable Housing, Transitional Housing and the Fifer Family Learning Center. The Chapter has held monthly seminars for the residents on topics such as professional development, resume writing, skin and health care, and parenting skills.
March of Dimes - For nearly 40 years, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has enjoyed a partnership with the March of Dimes in an effort to encourage women to seek prenatal care within the first trimester of pregnancy, thereby increasing the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Nu Xi Zeta implements three core service activities in support of the Sorority's partnership with March of Dimes:
- March for Babies - The Chapter annually participates in WalkAmerica, raising funds to educate and hopefully find a cure for premature birth. Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death. It has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., endangering the lives of more than half a million babies.
- Storks Nest - The chapter regularly supports the area Stork’s Nest on Sacramento Drive in Alexandria. The Stork’s Nest provides baby supplies and clothes to low income mothers who regularly participate in prenatal care and education programs.
- Prematurity Sunday -The Chapter partners with area churches to educate the faith community about prematurity. In July 2008, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) found that babies who died of preterm-related causes accounted for 36.5 percent of infant deaths in 2005, up from 34.6 percent in 2000. Approximately 100,000 African American newborns in the U.S. are affected each year by this common, costly and serious problem.
